PRINCIPAL NOTES

Parents –

Many thanks to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade parents and students for their attendance at our Assessment Night last week! I hope you gained valuable information to help ease your child’s test anxiety for State Assessments. I also hope you were able to see why we stress the importance of attendance not only during State Assessment week, but daily. Teaching research based strategies that make students successful take time and when students aren’t consistently in class, they miss out. State Math Assessments will begin Monday, April 7th and State Science will begin Monday, April 21st. Please try to schedule all dentist and doctor appointments outside of your child’s classroom testing schedule.

Please make plans now to attend our last set of conferences which will be March 11, 12 and 13. We will dismiss at 1:30 on each of those days. There will be no school on Friday, March 14. Remember, our school goal for conferences is always to reach 100% participation! We will have Mr. Gil Alvarez, Coleman Middle School Principal and Mrs. Jennifer Sinclair, Robinson Middle School Principal here during conference week to visit with 5th grade parents. Mr. Alvarez will be here on Tuesday, March 11th from 4-5 p.m. and Mrs. Sinclair will be here on Wednesday, March 12th from 1:30-2:30. Stop by to visit with them either before or after your conferences!!

Parents, I have seen several students with "Heely’s" (tennis shoes with wheels) on at school. Please do not allow your student to wear these to school. They pose a huge safety risk!

If you are interested in finding out the improvements Adams may receive as a part of the proposed Bond Election, please visit the districts website at www.usd259.net, click on the "Bond Issue" link.

NURSE NOTES

Effective for the 2008-2009 school year, Hepatitis B (3 doses) and Varicella (1 dose) will be required for all students THROUGH GRADE 5 for the 2008-2009 school year. The requirements are being increased by two grade levels in an effort to expedite the coverage of the school population for protection against the two diseases. In each of the past four years, the requirement has only increased one grade level per school year.

Please talk to your physician and schedule your child’s appointment soon! This will be required before enrollment! Call 973-2652 if you have questions.

COUNSELOR NOTES

During March and April, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be taking state assessments in both reading and math.  Our 4th graders will also be taking science state assessments.

Here are 8 strategies your student can use for taking any kind of test.

Get plenty of sleep the night before the test.

Eat a healthy breakfast and wear clothes that are comfortable.

Pay close attention to test directions.

Answer the easy questions first, and then go back to the harder questions.

Read every answer before you choose one

If you’re not sure of the answer, rule out the choices that you know are wrong.  Then pick the best answer that’s left.

If you have time, check over your answers before you turn in the test.

If you start to feel stressed, take some deep breaths to relax.

"Believe in yourself and do your best!"

Eileen Gehlen, Counselor

LIBRARY NOTES

The Adams Library and School were overrun with all kinds of storybook characters. Straight from the pages of books were characters like Cinderella, Tinkerbell, Clifford, Thomas the Train, Football players, R.L. Stine- the author, Aunt Flossie, Junie B Jones, Judy Moody; The Doctor is In, Alicia Keys, Little Bill, Little Red Riding Hood, and a few "I like Me" standouts. Thanks to the students, staff, parents and our RIF Readers for making our Second RIF, an AWESOME DAY!

…And they’re rounding the corner! Ms. Cooper’s Third Graders are out in front with 322 reader slips returned. Gaining on this class is Ms Ross’ Fifth Grade Class with 114; followed closely behind in Ms Mumfords’ Fourth Grade Class with 109. Just 2 more weeks before the Third Quarter Winner is declared. Your class can still win this race, turn in those reader slips.

Mark your calendars for the Spring Book Fair. The book fair dates are March 11-13, 2008. The fair hours are Tuesday & Thursday from 1:30-8:00 pm and Wednesday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Please watch those backpacks for more information.

Parents, please check those backpacks for overdue notices. If your child has not brought home a library book, it may be because they have a book they need to return. Please feel free to stop by the library or call me at 973-2657. I would be more than happy to discuss this with you.
